Shoemakers Travel Center Menu - Lincoln Nebraska Welcome to Shoemaker’s Travel Center! At Shoemaker’s Shell Travel Center you’ll find good food, an excellent service center, and stores chock full of travel necessities. You’ll also find a one-of-a-kind place full of interesting, eye-catching curiosities. Look up and look around while you’re here and enjoy our collection of Antique Gas Pumps and Gas Station Memorabilia, check out our hand-painted Historic Route 6 Mural - and keep an eye out for the WTHIT s! The pumps and globes represent items used from 1910 on up to the 1970’s. As you walk around and look at the Memorabilia you can see how things have changed over the years. Older hand pumps would only register up to 10 gallons at a time. Imagine having to “fill ‘er up” with a hand pump today! Check out the 1927 International Truck parked in the hallway. Along the way you’ll find a 1918 Patriot Truck and a 1956 Cushman Eagle Scooter. Both of those are special to us because they were manufactured right here in Lincoln, making them a part of Lincoln’s history as well as our own. A copy of the Historic U.S. Route 6 Mural graces the bottom of the menu, but do take time to see the real thing in our convenience store clerestory. This hand- painted 8 feet tall, 206 feet long mural, represents 3,652 miles of Highway 6 across America. Starting at the tip of Cape Cod and ending on the waterfront at Long Beach, California, Historic Route 6 was the longest highway ever established in the US, and though its status was changed in the 1960s, it remains one of the longest continuous highways in the nation. Every image on the mural depicts something travelers might see along or very near Highway 6. Though its not as famous as its sister highway, we like to say Route 6 has half the digits, but twice the kicks. Are you still wondering about those WTHIT s? Don’t worry - they’re harmless. One of the things that make Shoemaker’s a unique place to stop is that the décor is a group effort. Once we started collecting things, farmers, friends, truck drivers, and customers from all walks of life started bringing in memorabilia of many sorts. Some of those contributions may cause you to scratch your head and say “What The Heck Is That?” Don’t be afraid to ask one of our regulars or one of our employees – even if no one knows what it is, the question makes a connection between two strangers. And that’s what really makes Shoemaker’s Travel Center different from the rest, whether you’re only passing through or come in regularly, it’s not just a travel center, it’s a community - and a family.
